Paulien Melis is Programme Developer at Waag. Her focus is on social innovation in the healthcare domain. She is one of the initiators of the MakeHealth programme, in which citizens, healthcare professionals, designers and fabricators co-design and co-produce personalised healthcare solutions, using digital fabrication tools. Paulien facilitates co-design workshops and presentations on makeable health and citizen-driven innovations.
Waag is building an international learning community of makers, citizens with healthcare challenges, healthcare professionals and designers, together with European partners and funded by the European Commission. We seek to involve these groups and connect relevant communities, and bring them directly into the design practice to co-design and co-produce personalised and open healthcare solutions. In building a centralised, international platform for documentation – Careables – we make knowledge and expertise accessible to everyone. New, open applications are published online, including all the design files and instructions. That means anyone can reproduce or adapt these applications, creating impact for society as a whole.
